
Vienna, Austria — September 2026 — The global mission-critical communications community convened in Vienna from 7 to 10 September for a series of TCCA meetings and technical workshops hosted by Frequentis at its headquarters, bringing together representatives from public safety organisations, government authorities, network operators, standards bodies and the communications industry.
The four-day programme provided a platform for stakeholders to address key developments shaping the transition toward secure, resilient and interoperable mission-critical broadband communications.
The programme began with the participation of Karl Wannenmacher, CTO of Frequentis, and included discussions across the Broadband Industry Group, Critical Communications Broadband Group, and Legal & Regulatory Working Group. The sessions examined industry priorities and the regulatory, technical and commercial challenges influencing the evolution of mission-critical communications.
A key focus of the week was the continued development and deployment of Mission Critical Services (MCX) across broadband networks. The programme concluded with a joint workshop involving TCCA and the Global Certification Forum (GCF), focusing on MCX certification, interoperability, testing and deployment.
The discussions highlighted the growing importance of collaboration between industry, public safety users, regulators, standards organisations and certification bodies as MCX technologies move from standards development toward broader operational deployment.
According to TCCA Board Chair Tero Pesonen, the meetings demonstrated the value of bringing the wider critical communications ecosystem together. The exchange of ideas across TCCA working groups is expected to help shape priorities and objectives for the coming year.
The Vienna meetings also underscored that the future of mission-critical communications extends beyond individual technologies or network platforms. For emergency services and frontline responders, communications systems must provide dependable connectivity and interoperability in situations where availability and response time can be critical.
Open standards, appropriate spectrum frameworks and robust certification mechanisms are therefore becoming increasingly important as public safety organisations evaluate the migration from traditional narrowband systems toward Mission Critical Broadband, MCX, private LTE and 5G, as well as hybrid communications environments.
The involvement of certification organisations such as GCF adds another dimension to the development of interoperable MCX ecosystems, particularly as vendors and operators seek consistent approaches to testing and certification across markets.
Frequentis' hosting of the Vienna programme reflects the increasingly collaborative nature of the mission-critical communications sector, where standards development, regulatory policy, certification and real-world deployment are becoming closely interconnected.
For the global industry, the discussions provide further evidence that the next stage of MCX development will depend not only on technological maturity, but also on sustained cooperation across the entire ecosystem.
