In a landmark collaboration, South African telecommunications leader MTN, global technology provider Huawei, and China Telecom have successfully deployed what is claimed to be Africa’s largest 5G-enabled private network for a manganese mining company in the Northern Cape, South Africa. This initiative, formalized through an agreement at AfricaCom 2023, underscores the partners’ commitment to leveraging advanced digital technologies to revolutionize mining operations.
The 5G private network is designed to enhance operational efficiency by delivering reliable, high-speed connectivity to support critical applications such as real-time worker monitoring, vehicle tracking, and the deployment of unmanned trucks. Additionally, the project incorporates energy-saving measures and improved resource management practices, aligning with international environmental standards.
Under this partnership, Huawei developed a customized 5G private network solution, MTN provided the necessary infrastructure and managed network integration, while China Telecom contributed its expertise in system integration and industrial digital solutions.
Driving Digital Transformation in Africa
Sudipto Moitra, General Manager of MTN ICT Converged Solutions, emphasized the transformative potential of 5G technology: “5G is not just about faster connectivity – it’s a catalyst for redefining how industries operate. Our collaboration with Huawei and China Telecom reflects MTN’s unwavering commitment to driving Africa’s digital transformation and enabling innovative solutions for key sectors such as mining.”
Alex Xing, Vice President of Huawei’s MTN Key Account Department, added: “This project represents a significant milestone not only for the mining industry but also for the broader digital transformation of Africa. We are proud to collaborate with MTN and industry partners to accelerate the adoption of 5GtoB solutions across the continent.”
Strengthening Strategic Partnerships
This initiative builds on a strategic partnership formed in November 2024 between MTN, China Telecom, and Huawei, which focuses on advancing 5G technology, cloud services, IoT, and artificial intelligence (AI). The collaboration aims to enhance connectivity, optimize network operations, and support the adoption of cutting-edge technologies in the South African market. Customers are expected to benefit from increased access to IoT and AI technologies, alongside improved products and services.
Pioneering 5G Innovation in Africa
MTN and Huawei have a proven track record of innovation in the 5G space. Earlier this year, the partners completed what they claim to be Africa’s first 5G-Advanced (5.5G) network trial at MTN’s headquarters in Johannesburg. This achievement underscores their leadership in driving next-generation connectivity solutions.
In April 2024, MTN Group and Huawei inaugurated a state-of-the-art technology innovation lab at MTN’s headquarters. The lab focuses on research and development in key areas such as 5G and 5G-Advanced technologies, AI, big data analytics, cloud computing, FTTH, automation, and digital financial services.
Expanding 5G Coverage and Capabilities
Since launching its 5G network in 2020, MTN South Africa has significantly expanded its coverage, reaching 44% of the population by 2024, up from 25%. The company added 900 new 5G sites in 2024 alone and plans to finalize four commercial proposals for 5G private networks by early 2025. These networks will target key industries, including mining, manufacturing, education, and logistics, further solidifying MTN’s position as a leader in Africa’s digital transformation journey.
