Anterix, a leader in private wireless broadband for critical infrastructure, today announced a strategic 900 MHz spectrum purchase agreement with CPS Energy, the nation’s largest community-owned electric and gas utility. Under the agreement, CPS Energy will gain access to Anterix’s licensed 900 MHz broadband spectrum to build a mission-critical private wireless broadband network tailored to utility grid operations.

The new network will support advanced grid automation, faster outage detection and restoration, real-time situational awareness, and strengthened operational resilience and reliability as CPS Energy modernizes its infrastructure and integrates advanced energy technologies. The agreement reflects a growing industry trend of utilities choosing utility-owned communications networks to better serve customers and manage critical infrastructure demands.

“We believe that bringing all of Texas — especially the ERCOT region — onto a common 900 MHz capability will enhance mutual aid, support data sharing, and provide scale for operational improvements,” said Chris Guttman-McCabe, Anterix Chief Regulatory and Corporate Communications Officer.

Anterix President and CEO Scott Lang added: “CPS Energy’s investment in 900 MHz private wireless broadband spectrum underscores what we are seeing across the industry: utilities are choosing communications networks they can own, secure and evolve — because the grid can’t wait.”

CPS Energy leadership highlighted the role of the private wireless network in the utility’s broader grid modernization strategy. “This investment in grid connectivity and modernization is key to our operational evolution and will help us better serve our customers,” said Rudy D. Garza, President and CEO of CPS Energy. Evan O’Mahoney, CPS Energy Chief Information Officer, noted the network will improve field communications and provide enhanced reliability during major weather events as part of the utility’s ongoing digital transformation.

CPS Energy serves more than 970,000 electric customers and 390,000 natural gas customers across the San Antonio region. With this deal, eight utilities now leverage 900 MHz private wireless spectrum across 15 states, and combined Anterix utility partners will cover over 93 % of counties in Texas with utility-controlled broadband networks.
