Presentations were delivered by finalists across the course of the event’s five days, with the judges having whittled down a record number of entries to a shortlist for each category. The four most innovative projects were then chosen as the winners, showcasing huge levels of expertise demonstrated across the sector. In one category, the public vote was used as a tie breaker.

Speaking of the criteria on which the winners were chosen, chair of the judging panel Robin Davis said: “When it came to the submissions, our priority for success was an obvious assessment of customer need, as well as innovation demonstrated by the project. Were there any unique project challenges? Was there anything that stood out to us as exceptional?”

He continued: “I would like to thank all of the judges for taking part in this process, as well as all of the nominees and all the entrants. Choosing the winners has been by no means an easy task - all of the entries this year were of really high quality, and in some cases, it was incredibly close.”

Categories and winners included:

· Best use of critical communications during a major event. Hamad Alnueimi, Abu Dhabi Police; Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, 2019

· Best use of critical communications in public safety. Roland Gueubel, Center for Applied Molecular Technologies, CTMA/Université Catholique de Louvain; B-LiFE and ETELM deployment for key worker COVID-19 testing in Italy

· Best use of critical communications in transport. Thomas Brewster, Transport for London; Push-to-Talk for school buses

· Best use of critical communications in utilities. Magdalena Potejko-Malicka, Motorola Solutions; going digital at Energa.

Discussing the awards, TCCA Chief Executive Tony Gray said: “The ICCAs have showcased the high standard of work taking place within our sector, year after year. The 2020 programme has been no different, and has highlighted some of the most impressive projects we’ve seen. They are all worthy winners.”

Next year’s ICCAs will be held at Critical Communications World, taking place 8-10 June at the IFEMA in Madrid, Spain.
