In response to the widespread power outages across Far West NSW caused by severe storms that downed seven transmission towers, the Telecommunications Services Functional Area (TELCOFA) has been working tirelessly since mid-October to restore and sustain vital communications.
Working closely with the Energy and Utility Services Functional Area (EUSFA), telecommunications carriers, and emergency responders, TELCOFA has coordinated efforts to maintain critical communications infrastructure while mains power was being restored.
To support Emergency Services Organisations on the ground, TELCOFA rapidly deployed mobile radio assets to strategic locations, including Broken Hill, Wilcannia, White Cliffs, and Tibooburra. Additionally, after four days of around-the-clock efforts, TELCOFA brought a new Public Safety Network site online in Thackaringa, ahead of schedule, significantly expanding coverage to affected areas.
TELCOFA remains dedicated to monitoring and managing risks to telecommunications infrastructure. Through enhanced mapping and intelligence tools, TELCOFA strengthens risk mitigation, protection, and network restoration efforts, ensuring resilience across the region’s critical communications networks.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to the teams at EUSFA for their swift coordination in restoring power to affected communities. As we conclude our response phase, we pass the baton to the NSW Reconstruction Authority to lead the ongoing recovery efforts.
