FirstNet Authority Enhances Communication for Federal Agencies, Supporting Public Safety Mission

When public safety is mentioned, many people think of local, state, or tribal first responders. However, an extensive network of federal agencies also plays a vital role in ensuring public safety. The First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet Authority) is dedicated to supporting these federal agencies and all FirstNet users, helping them communicate and operate more effectively.


As the nation’s largest federal agency, the Department of Defense (DOD) has a mission deeply rooted in public safety. Federal responders within the DOD are often stationed at domestic bases, where they serve as primary first responders and provide support to local public safety agencies. FirstNet ensures these federal users can maintain seamless communication both on and off base, enhancing coordination and response.


Strengthening Connections: Defense Agencies and Local Public Safety

Julien Crolet, Deputy Fire Chief at Fort Belvoir, understands firsthand the positive impact of FirstNet on communication capabilities.


Before FirstNet, Fort Belvoir’s Fire and Emergency Services division faced significant communication challenges due to unreliable service in the area. “Now, that's all gone away and we're able to communicate daily with no issues, utilizing several methods that are all interoperable by use of FirstNet,” Crolet explained.


Fort Belvoir, a U.S. Army installation in Fairfax County, Virginia, supports various incidents such as fires, medical emergencies, and hazardous materials responses. This requires daily collaboration with Fairfax County public safety agencies, making interoperability crucial. FirstNet’s reliable communication tools enable faster and more efficient response times, improving overall public safety in the region.


Ensuring Reliability and Security for DOD Agencies

Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall Police Chief William Johnson emphasized the importance of FirstNet in ensuring reliable, secure, and redundant communication across military and civilian personnel.


Serving the National Capital Region, Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall includes Fort Myer, Henderson Hall, and Fort McNair, spanning Arlington, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. The base plays a key role in supporting public safety at events that draw large crowds, such as those at Arlington National Cemetery. Johnson noted that adopting FirstNet allows the base to communicate seamlessly with local, state, and federal partners during emergencies.


“Being one of 52 federal law enforcement agencies in the National Capital Region, we needed to communicate with all of our partners in case of emergency,” said Johnson.


FirstNet Authority’s Government Engagement Team: Supporting Federal FirstNet Users

The FirstNet Authority’s Government Engagement team is composed of a diverse group of experts who collaborate closely with federal agencies to address their unique communication needs. The team educates agencies about FirstNet’s capabilities and ensures the network meets mission-critical requirements.


Johnson acknowledged that the partnership with FirstNet has enhanced situational awareness and provided his team with insights into emerging technologies. Additionally, FirstNet deployable assets and coverage-enhancing tools have been used to meet communication needs during special events.


At every stage of network integration, the FirstNet Authority’s team supports federal users, assisting with installation, infrastructure, and acquisition while ensuring compliance with federal security regulations.


“The FirstNet Authority representative will come and talk to us at any time that's needed,” said Crolet. “They're quick, they're responsive, and it's been an absolute pleasure working with them.”
