Times of India reports that the Chennai airport will soon introduce Terrestrial Trunked Radio (TETRA), a digital trunked mobile radio system, which will offer secure wireless communication in the terminals and airside operational areas. The upgrade will enhance operational efficiency by providing a secure and reliable radio link for airline operators, airport staff and the control tower, said a statement.

Wireless communication is used by staff at check in, baggage handling, customs, immigration, security, boarding, fuel stations, and maintenance. A 40-meter tower was installed by Airports Authority of India (AAI) at Chennai Airport for the radio network. This is the first time an airport run by AAI will be introducing the new TETRA system. TETRA is a global standard for professional radio communications for many Airprts arond the world.
